Erlanger and Prisma Health: A Partnership Takes Shape

Erlanger started more than 130 years ago with a gift, born of a community's belief in what a hospital could mean for Chattanooga. That same belief is shaping our next chapter.

In July, Erlanger signed a non-binding letter of intent to join Prisma Health, a nonprofit health system based in Greenville, S.C. The decision followed more than a year of careful study by Erlanger's Board of Directors. Prisma Health stood out for its commitment to local care. The proposed partnership includes $2 billion in investments to expand access across the region.

The next milestone is a definitive agreement, which is targeted for the end of the year. After that, the partnership needs approval from Erlanger's board, the Erlanger Health Oversight Panel, the Hamilton County Commission, and state and federal regulators. Until every step is complete, nothing changes for patients or staff.

Key commitments are already in place. The Erlanger name is protected. A regional board based in Chattanooga will guide care in East Tennessee, and Erlanger will hold the majority of its seats. Erlanger President and CEO Jim Coleman will serve as regional CEO.

Care keeps moving forward in the meantime. This year alone, Erlanger Medical Group passed 1 million patient visits for the first time. Level III trauma care is coming to Erlanger East. More than $15 million in grants is also strengthening rural care.
